ToggleMerida, the white city, is the most populous city in the Yucatan. Lovers of architecture and art find bread for their teeth given the number of ancient buildings, churches, museums and monuments. In front of the Cathedral of Sant’Ildefonso opens Plaza Grande. This space is surrounded by prestigious historic buildings and is full of well-kept gardens. Every night always different manifestations come to life (from music to dance) that recall the rituals of the ancient Maya. Then, visiting the handicraft markets or the small family-run shops, you cannot help but buy some objects as a souvenir.
This city deserves to be visited above all for the unusual feature that has earned it the nickname of the Yellow City. In fact, the houses, shops and churches are all painted yellow. Definitely worth visiting is the Convent of Sant’Antonio da Padova and the great pyramid of Kinich Kak Moo. On the top of the latter you can admire the city and the surrounding areas. In ancient times this city was home to two pyramids. One was destroyed by the Spaniards and a monastery was built in its place. The other is still partially well reserved.
If you are a sea lover you need to reach the coasts of the Riviera Maya. They are the most beautiful and evocative in all of Mexico. Playa Carmen for its beach and nightlife is definitely worth a stop. It is full of resorts and hotels so it can form the basis for visiting the wonderful surroundings. In Akumal you can swim alongside a turtle. Finally, it is worth visiting Puerto Morelos, a small fishing town. Also worth mentioning is the beautiful coral reef that develops off the coast. It is a nature reserve for which the passage of yachts and motor boats are prohibited. From here begins the famous Ruta de los Cenotes which is becoming more and more touristy.
